First of all, this was the first ever WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Festival, which was co-founded by Peter himself. The two shows are unique in almost every possible way. The first show, which was done on July 16, 1982, marked the first time that Peter and the band performed songs from his then new album Security. There are some interesting arrangements on these songs. Two older songs, Biko and I Go Swimming were done as well. I Go Swimming sounds very different to the versions heard on the Melt Tour and the following Security Tour. This gig also contains the only live performance of the South-African traditional Shosholoza. The line-up for this gig is Peter Gabriel, David Rhodes, Larry Fast, Jerry Marotta and John Giblin. Peter Hammill, of Van Der Graaf Generator, helps out with a couple of backing vocals. The Ekome Dance Company, who was responsible for the drumming on Rhythm of the Heat on the Security album, joined the band during I Go Swimming and stayed on until the end. Peter himself was never really satisfied with the show, also because of the lack of rehearsing. In his own words: "The performance was really pretty shitty". He thought the second show worked a lot better, because it was basically improvised. This show introduced a totally new line-up, which would also never play again after this: Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill, Larry Fast, David Rhodes, Shankar and Stewart Copeland. The setlist is also very interesting. The band performs Hammill's A Ritual Mask, and Shankar's Indian Melody. The two most interesting songs however are Dog 1 Dog 2 Dog 3 and Across the River. The former was written by Gabriel, but never released. This is the only performance of it to date, although he still did a minimalistic version of it during some of the soundchecks during the Security Tour. Tony Levin released his version of the song recently on one of his solo albums. Across the River has been played a lot during Gabriel's solo tours, but this version contains all the musicians who co-wrote the song: Gabriel, Rhodes, Shankar and Copeland. This is probably the longest version he ever did of it: it clocks in over 14 minutes. The encore is a short reprise of the chorus of Across the River. WHAT WAS DONE? The two recordings were both speed corrected first, and converted to 32-bit. Further steps were equalisation and multi-band compression. Since both of the recordings were from a mono-source the optimal channel of the two was duplicated. Then, with a couple of tricks, the mono-source was converted into a 'fake' stereo-sound. Final equalisation was done, and finally the stereo-image was expanded just a little. There were a couple of breaks during the first gig, which were corrected. There was a glitch during the second show, during Across the River. This was corrected. The bonus tracks were remastered in a similar way, although very fast, but I used noise reduction on these two tracks. An early present from Santa this year! Enjoy!
