Chris Taylor was brought into the band (under the circumstances described elsewhere) by Mark Hewins, who was briefly the band's guitarist on their 1999 tour. They'd worked together on studio projects. Interestingly Taylor was a sometime member of Soul II Soul. I don't think he had any "progressive rock" background. He stayed on for the 2000 and 2001 tours, and played on the "Zero To Infinity" album.
