"I bought a copy of this tape off of Zorch Enterprises (Chicago) back in 1984
or so.
He hooked me up with my first live Frith / Henry Cow tapes.
So yes this is "FM", a radio broadcast (unknown station) of a pre-concert
interview before a "guitars on the table" show at Vassar College.
But apart from the end snippet, it's really a guy with a tape deck & mic, recording
Frith talking with him, more "AUD"-like.
This baby is very hissy, but it's still quite listenable.
The audio here was preceded on my tape by the interviewer talking a bit on-air about
Frith.
But this was done as a voice-over atop of official music, so I removed that lead-in (about
75sec.)
Since I lopped it out, here's a transcript:
"Fred Frith is one of the foremost pioneers in pop music today. As well as
having played with Henry Cow for, uh, 10 years, and the Art Bears for 2 years, he has
aided musicians such as Brian Eno, The Muffins, and Jan Steele (sp?) on several recording
projects. Since the breakup of Henry Cow, mr Frith has vigorously avoided the
clumsy, impersonal monolithic rock group, and chosen the path of being a mobile
independent musician, which has left him free to choose what he wants to do & when he
wants to do it. One direction that Fred Frith has been actively pursuing is that of purely
improvised guitar solos. I'm speaking with him here, in the Vassar College center,
before a concert of this kind."
So here you have the interview (which is continuous, but I broke it into a few pieces),
and a mini-snippet of the same interviewer, now on-air, confirming the date / noting he's
gonna play a Henry Cow track, and then it cuts off. Frith talks about his style of
playing, the effect of new wave / punk on people's attitides towards music, & various
projects in the works". |
